Busy Holiday Season

Wow, it is already the Christmas Season. The High School Band has participated in the Christmas City Parade in Duluth and the floats have floated on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

December will be a very busy time for the music department.

On December 4th we will have our annual Cookie Walk at the Senior Center in Downtown Grantsburg from 8 AM to 2 PM. There will be free coffee and hot cider as well as live holiday music as performed by the Grantsburg Music Department. We will then move our cookies up to the High School for the concessions for the performances of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" happening at 7 PM on December 4th and 3 PM and 7 PM on December 5th.

MS Parents mark your Calendars for the Middle School Christmas concert which will take place on December 13th at 7 PM at the High School Auditorium.

This year marks the return of the High School Holiday Indulgence to the High School. It will be held in the High School Gym. We would like to turn this into a Winter Wonderland with Christmas trees, lights, wreaths, and garland. We are looking for donations of artificial Christmas trees, wreaths, lights, or anything else you think we can use to turn the gym into a delightful holiday place. There will be music, food, fellowship and fun. Please contact the high school music department to get your tickets.

Events and Updates

Hello Grantsburg Band Fans,

On Sunday May 1 we will be travelling to UW-Eau Claire for the annual State Solo and Ensemble Festival there. This year I am proud to report that the High School Handbell Choir and the Woodwind Ensemble, both under the direction of Angela Bram will be participating. We also have one soloist participating. While we have no schedule as of yet, we can expect to leave very early. We should arrive back by 6:00 P.M. or so. This segues into the next event.

Randy Sabien/Laura Caviani http://www.randysabien.com/enternew.html

The night of state solo and ensemble, members of the Grantsburg High School band will be attending the Randy Sabien/Laura Caviani jazz concert happening at Festival Theatre in St. Croix Falls. This will be a great opportunity for these band members to see some live Jazz Music. We have also been blessed that the Festival Theatre will be helping us with the cost of these tickets. Cost per student will be very minimal. Parents, I encourage you to come to this concert; it is a spectacular way to support the local arts in the communities in and around Grantsburg.

POPS Concert

The Monday after all of the exciting Saturday events we will be having our annual POPS concert in the high school Gym. The warm up schedule will soon be going home with the students. This year's theme is a tribute to some of the music of the rock and roll genre. Some of the music has been chosen by the students and some even written by the students. The concert will take place at 7:00 P.M. Monday May 3rd in the High School Gym. Students (or Parents) are encouraged to dress as their favorite rock star or musician. Hope to see you there!

Florida!

On Friday March 15th, with the rain at their backs and the umbrellas in the spectator’s hands, the Grantsburg High School Band took to the streets of Universal Orlando. Despite the rain, the band performed.”The other band had canceled, so I figured we shouldn’t be a bunch of wimps” said Mr. Schulz. After the band marched, they went back into Universal Studios to spend the remainder of the day on the rides. Following the day in the park they went to the hotel to get ready for the French acrobatic group Cirque Du Soliel which performs at Downtown Disney. One of the highlights of the trip, Cirque Du Soliel did not disappoint. Their death defying, high rise acts make them one of the premier groups in the nation. Saturday was spent at Universal Island of Adventure. This is the park with the construction of the new Harry Potter theme park and many of the roller coaster rides are a part of this park. At the conclusion of the day the Jazz Band members had dinner at the largest Hard Rock CafĂ© in the nation at Universal City Walk. This was made possible by the donation of Grantsburg Women Working, as the Jazz Band performed at one of their benefits. The day ended with a trip to a local outdoor mall. Sunday was another eventful day. The band first went to the Kennedy Space Center. While there was no launch that day, there were still many exciting things to do. A large group of students went on the new launch experience which simulates an actual space shuttle launch. There is an Imax theatre, “shuttle garden”, a full size shuttle you can tour, and also a great deal of historical information about the space program. After visiting the Kennedy Space center it was time to go to the beach. The band spent the remainder of the day sunning at beautiful Cocoa Beach, with some of them also checking out the first and largest Ron Jon surf shop in the nation. Following the beach they boarded the bus to come home, a little tired, but with a lot of great memories. Mr. Schulz and the band would like to thank all of the people who made this trip possible; the School Board Members, the Staff at Grantsburg High School, Grantsburg Family Foods, Matt Fury, the local businesses who donated supplies for the trip as well as positions on the discount cards, all of the community members who have supported us throughout the year, and especially the parents. Without all of you this trip would not have been possible. The Grantsburg High School Band students now have many great memories and it is all due to your help and support. Thank you.

Very busy March!

As many of you know, March is one of the busiest months in any music department. Grantsburg High School is no exception. As you can see by my posting schedule we have been so busy in the department that I have been unable to post any developments. We just returned from Florida and what a memorable trip it was! I hope all of the kids had a blast, because I sure did. I look forward to when we travel again. All of your dedication and hard work paid off.

Tomorrow March 18th there will be a parent informational meeting for the upcoming solo and ensemble contest in Grantsburg on March 25th. The meeting will take place at 5:30 and will only go until 6:00 if you have any questions or cannot make it to this meeting and would still like to help out with solo and ensemble then please send an e-mail to either myself (Andrew.schulz@grantsburg.l12.wi.us) or Linda Benge (lbeng@grantsburg.k12.wi.us). We will be happy to have you help out. March 25th will be a very busy day; I hope you will be able to help out.

Check back more often for updates.

Musically yours,

--Mr. Schulz
